Visionary Communications set out to expand broadband access in Buena Vista, Colorado and came to Selcon to deliver a full-scale, 100-mile fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) build designed to reach both underserved areas and growing housing developments, many of which are located near scenic Collegiate Peaks and along the headwaters of the Arkansas River.
But the natural beauty of the region also came with challenges. Portions of the build pushed into mountainous foothills, requiring a combination of nearly every broadband construction technique available: aerial installation, directional drilling, open trenching, and plowing.
Adding to the challenge, the project spanned multiple jurisdictions and property types, meaningSelcon had to coordinate closely with five different homeowners’ associations, each with their own specific regulations and expectations. Some areas required city and county approvals, while others involved privately owned utilities, each scenario demanding a different communication strategy and planning approach.
Selcon began project planning in January and applied its turnkey fiber construction expertise to drive every stage of the build. The project required daily coordination across multiple entities, flexible field execution, and a deep understanding of both public and private infrastructure management.
To address the region’s varied terrain and property ownership, Selcon deployed a full range of construction methods:
Selcon also made a strong effort to integrate with the local community. In a proactive show of support, the team staged construction equipment to assist with wildfire response outside the city, a testament to Selcon’s commitment to safety, readiness, and local engagement.
Despite the unique challenges presented by this project, Selcon is on pace to complete the Buena Vista FTTH network one month ahead of schedule. This accelerated timeline demonstrates the company’s ability to manage large-scale rural fiber builds, overcome logistical challenges, and foster positive relationships with stakeholders at every level, from city officials to HOA leaders and utility owners.
The Buena Vista project highlights Selcon’s reputation as a leading FTTH construction partner in Colorado and the broader Mountain West region. The team’s ability to adapt construction methods, streamline communication across jurisdictions, and maintain community trust makes them an ideal contractor for high-demand, mixed-terrain broadband deployments.
