Visionary Broadband (VCN) needed to expand its broadband network in Canon City to meet rising demand from both residential and commercial users. The existing infrastructure couldn’t support the level of service VCN aimed to provide, particularly as the city grew and more customers required reliable, high-speed fiber access.
To address this, VCN planned a large-scale fiber build beginning with a backbone loop around Canon City’s perimeter, followed by a full fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) rollout.
The challenge was clear: deliver a high-capacity network across a mix of urban and suburban terrain, while coordinating with a wide range of stakeholders, including city departments, road authorities, and utility operators. Tight timelines, active neighborhoods, and permit-dependent workflows added complexities at every stage.
Selcon began project planning in January and applied its turnkey fiber construction expertise to drive every stage of the build. The project required daily coordination across multiple entities, flexible field execution, and elcon was first contracted to construct the perimeter fiber loop, forming the backbone of Canon City’s upgraded broadband infrastructure. After successfully executing that initial phase, Selcon was awarded the citywide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployment.
The expanded scope involved extensive daily collaboration with local agencies and utility providers to maintain momentum and ensure efficient execution.
Selcon and its partners are on track to finish the Canon City fiber project 45 days ahead of schedule, a major achievement for a build of this size and complexity.
This project was also recognized by Visionary’s CEO on the Fiber for Breakfast podcast, which spotlighted its importance to Canon City’s growth and broadband future. Listen to the episode here.
